What is Anthropeum?

Anthropeum asks two questions about a historical object: where was it made, and when? You inspect the artifact rather than guess a word. The pleasure is in noticing details: materials, decoration, construction and the way an object might have been used.

Anthropeum strategy & tips

Separate observation from assumption

Name three visible details before choosing a region. A material, pattern or construction technique is evidence; a feeling that something looks old is much less useful. Start with what the image actually shows.

Avoid a single-clue guess

An unfamiliar script or decorative motif can be tempting, but objects and techniques travelled. Look for a second detail that supports your first idea. If the clues conflict, widen your estimate rather than forcing a confident story.

Make two independent estimates

A likely region does not automatically establish a date. First form a geographic hypothesis, then use the object’s construction or context to estimate its period. Review the two errors separately after the round.
